Textual Variant: The most ancient and reliable copies end the book in verse 8. Verses 9 to 20 are not part of the original text, but the product of early apologetics. Because the original endind seemed too abrupt, scribes managed to create a “longer ending” based on chunks of other Gospels. The Long Ending has become part of the traditional reading.
